Removals UK Health and Safety Policy

Removals UK is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across our removal services, including domestic moves, office relocations and specialist item handling throughout our operating areas in the United Kingdom.

We recognise that effective health and safety management is an integral part of running a professional removals company and is essential to the quality of service we provide. Our aim is to prevent accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risk and implementing sensible, proportionate controls.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the senior management of Removals UK. They are responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are made available to implement this policy and to achieve continuous improvement in health and safety performance.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including planning work safely, briefing teams, monitoring performance and addressing any health and safety concerns promptly.

All employees, regardless of role, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and near misses, and participate in relevant training.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Removals UK carries out regular risk assessments for typical removal activities, including packing, lifting, loading, driving and unloading at customer properties and business premises. Site-specific assessments are completed when required, for example for restricted access properties, high-rise buildings or moves involving unusual or heavy items.

From these assessments we develop safe systems of work to minimise risk. These include guidance on manual handling techniques, the use of lifting aids, safe stacking and loading of vehicles, route planning, traffic management at loading points and appropriate personal protective equipment where necessary.

Risk assessments and procedures are reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in work practices, equipment or legislation. Lessons learned from incidents and near misses are incorporated into updated procedures.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of removal activities and is treated as a priority risk area. Removals UK provides training so that staff understand correct lifting, carrying and team-handling methods and know how to assess loads before moving them.

Where practicable, we use trolleys, dollies, harnesses, ramps and other handling aids to reduce manual strain. Vehicles and equipment are selected and maintained to support safe loading and unloading and to protect both staff and customer property.

Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate any mechanical or powered equipment. All equipment is inspected regularly and removed from use immediately if found to be defective.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and are inspected and serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements. Defects are reported promptly and vehicles are not used if there is any doubt about their safety.

Drivers are required to hold the correct licence for the vehicles they operate and must comply with all road traffic laws, including speed limits and driving hours regulations where applicable. Journey planning takes account of realistic timings, rest breaks and safe routes to minimise pressure on drivers.

Loads are secured to prevent movement during transit. Particular care is taken when transporting large, heavy or fragile items to protect both road users and customer belongings.

Customer and Public Safety

We recognise our duty to protect customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our work. When operating at homes, offices or shared premises, we plan access routes, identify potential hazards and manage the movement of people and vehicles to reduce risk.

Where appropriate, we use warning signs, barriers or temporary controls to separate work areas from public access. Our teams are instructed to maintain clear walkways, avoid blocking exits and communicate with customers about any temporary restrictions or hazards during the move.

Training, Information and Supervision

Removals UK provides suitable training and information to ensure that employees can carry out their roles safely and competently. This includes induction training for new starters, job-specific instruction for removal operatives and drivers, and refresher training as needed.

Training covers topics such as manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, working at height where relevant, use of protective equipment and emergency procedures. Supervisors monitor working practices on site and provide coaching and guidance to reinforce safe behaviours.

Accidents, Incidents and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly in accordance with company procedures. This enables Removals UK to investigate causes, identify trends and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Where required by law, we will report certain incidents to the appropriate enforcing authority. Records of accidents and investigations are kept and reviewed to support continuous improvement in safety performance.

Welfare, Health and Wellbeing

Removals UK recognises the physical demands of removal work and takes steps to support the health and wellbeing of employees. Reasonable welfare facilities are provided, and work is organised to avoid excessive physical strain where possible.

We encourage staff to raise any concerns about fitness for work, fatigue, stress or other health issues that may affect safety. Where appropriate, we may review duties, working patterns or support measures to help manage such issues.

Policy Review and Communication

This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers and other interested parties on request. It forms part of our wider commitment to professional, reliable and safe removal services across the United Kingdom.

The policy is reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains suitable, adequate and effective in light of operational changes, legal requirements and industry best practice. Any revisions are communicated to staff and incorporated into training and procedures.

By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Removals UK aims to provide a safe working environment for our teams and a safe, smooth removal experience for every customer we serve.
